I created this zine as a year–end project for a former employer, WritersCorps. WritersCorps is a project of the San Francisco Art Commission and places professional writers in community settings to teach creative writing to youth. I worked for WritersCorps from 2003–2008 serving kids & young adults in a variety of settings: after–school programs, traditional classrooms, youth detention facilities, and SF County jail. My longest tenure was at Ida B. Wells, a continuation high school in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood. I began creating profiles of some of the amazing students I was working with and – before I knew it – had a book. Five of these profiles made it into a book published by the City Lights Foundation, Days I Moved Through Ordinary Sounds: The Teachers of WritersCorps in Poetry & Prose.
