I have my ex- Mike to thank for all my current zine imput. If it hadn’t been for the painful break-up we endured during the winter of 2006-2007, I probably wouldn’t have remembered what an emotional release drawing with Sharpies could be. The summer prior, I had done this amazing month-long writing residency on Whidbey Island in Washington state, where I had attempted to resuscitate a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age novel I’d started years before. All that solitary work on a manuscript that I was pretty sure would never see the light of day made me think again about my choice of medium. Maybe I needed to get back to writing comic books, or making zines? The upheaval that ensued during the break-up gave me plenty of material and the motivation to try to process what was going on through words and images. Plus, being able to publish immediately via Xerox machine was hella gratifying.
